Heart Association Benefit - Oct. 15, 2006

Every year, Naples Community Hospital Healthcare system (NCHHC) raises money for the American Heart Association. On Sunday night, a benefit for NCHHC was held at Captain Brien's Seafood and Raw Bar.

Karen Spina, outpatient therapist for NCHHC and employee and wife of Brien Spina, co-owner of Capt. Brien's, originally approached her husband about doing a benefit. Brien's idea was to have NCHHC sell tickets for $20, which included dinner with a choice of pot roast or fish and chips as well as the comedy show.

"There are about eight sites in the NCHHC system that tries to raise money for the American Heart Association, so we have a friendly competition," Karen Spina said. "Because I work with Marco, I want to be able to come up with the most money raised. We advertised to all the sites within the NCH system in Collier County."

John Campbell, the supervisor of NCH of Marco Outpatient Rehabilitation, chose to take a more active roll in the fund-raiser this year.
"I'm one of the captains for NCH for Rehabilitation," said Campbell. "My father and two uncles have died of heart disease, so this is sort of a personal benefit for me and for all the people on Marco Island that are going to be involved in this. I decided to be a good fund-raiser."

He continued, "I'd just like to say that overall wellness is such an important thing, and that's one of the ideas that we're really trying to stress. We're having t-shirts made that read on the front, "Want to be an American Idol?" and on the back, "Don't be an Idle American."

Brien Spina has offered his facility in the past to other charitable organizations and schools.

"Obviously, having benefits such as this works great for us. We bring people in and let them know what we are all about," he stated. "They might enjoy the show and come back. I also think it's a good form of advertising by giving the people a dinner and show for the price of the benefit ticket."

Sunday night was a special treat since Daniel Ligori, the well known guitarist from Duval Street in Key West, provided the entertainment before and after the comedy show. He will also be there next week, having been booked for eight weeks.

The comedy show featured Johnny Pizzi, not only a comedian but a magician as well. He was a huge hit.

Total funds that were raised for the AHA on Sunday amounted to $552. The Spina's also donated all the printing and ad copy as an additional donation.
Fund raising by NCHHC will continue until the end of November. Anyone wishing to make a donation may call 393-4079 and they will be directed to the appropriate party.
